What is acne and how can I treat it?
Acne is characterised by an outbreak of pimples and inflammation of the skin. The severity of this can vary between person to person ranging from mild to moderate. In the most severe cases the acne can present as cysts which can bust releasing pus. This can often lead to raised, uneven areas of skin which in some cases results in scarring. Acne begins to form when pores become blocked with sebum which is released from the sebaceous gland - its usual function to seal in moisture of the skin and prevent desiccation becomes overactive resulting in increase surface lips.
There are numerous suggested causes for acne. The first being poor hygiene. A good skin care routine which involves an exfoliation step can help reduce the probability of this. Hormones can also play an important role as witnessed in puberty. The fluctuation of estrogen and progesterone causes an increase in sebum production. It is suggested that acne can become more severe in people who are subject to high stress levels. Furthermore acne formation isn't just localized to the facial area. Pimples can often form on the chest, upper back and shoulders.
